ADVANCED PROCESS &

PERFORMANCE

1 YEAR COURSE

10th September 2018- 2nd August 2019

WHO ARE W1WORKSHOPS?

Co-founded by actors Nancy Sullivan & David Thaxton W1WORKSHOPS began with a single song class and has snowballed into a company that offers consistent, varied and affordable acting and performance training all year round.

We formed in 2011 after hearing several reports from students of overpriced and under-detailed workshops they had attended. It got us thinking that it must be possible to offer performance workshops that cover everything a student could wish for yet offer them this at a fantastically affordable price. And so it was! What’s more, we could do this with an unrivaled level of detail, truth, inspiration and individual attention.

With our collective 30 years of experience and contacts in the industry we found we could use our contacts and colleagues at the very highest level in the industry to come in to hold classes for us and introduce them to talent that had not yet been seen, which has had great results for so many.

In these cynical times W1 shine out like a beacon of positivity and honest endeavour. They bring an essential fire, intelligence and passion to our industry without ego or pretentiousness. The champions of the unnoticed or unappreciated, they give their hearts and minds to the sole purpose of improving all aspects of a performer’s skill set, attitude and long term career prospects.

COWLEY KNOX & GUY- leading London agent

Since we formed we have seen students gain places at drama schools and institutions such as LSMT, Mountview, Rose Bruford, Trinity and the NYMT. Even more thrillingly, we regularly see our students gain professional credits and representation from agencies. Several of our students are now working on West End shows such as Les Miserables, Mamma Mia!, The Play That Goes Wrong and more, and many others have gained or changed agent representation and advanced their careers through meeting and there talent progressing with with leading directors and casting directors.

Yet as we’ve grown and developed we’ve become increasingly concerned with the state of education in the industry. Mass intakes on foundation courses with no agent meetings at the end and absolutely no guarantee of further training at the institution you attended, tuition coming from those sometimes many, many years out of the industry and seemingly unaware of the actual realities performers will face and, above all, frankly extortionate fees have led us to a decision…

WHY IS THIS 1 YEAR PROCESS & PERFORMANCE COURSE DIFFERENT?

W1’s 1-year Process & Performance course sets itself apart by being one of the most bespoke and unique courses offered.

    Just 14 students

Three days a week 10-6pm (allowing you to still work while you train)

Top level training from tutors all CURRENTLY WORKING IN THE INDUSTRY

Two public performances 1 play and 1 concert of two different pieces in London.

IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

If you have attended any of our workshops you may already know this answer to this question as our ethos and attitude in workshops will be the same during the 1 year course. What this course isn’t is a foundation course with the view to you then going on for further training. This course is designed to prepare you for the industry in every possible way from every possible angle, from getting jobs to remaining a creative, knowledgable actor even in quiet times.

We will provide you over the course of the year with a process in all areas of performance, from TV technique to Acting Through Song which you can apply from Day 1 of your career. You will leave the course feeling prepared, you will be introduced to agents and casting directors to get you off to the best possible start and you will have individual time and attention to fulfill your full progression and potential in that year ensuring no one we accept on to this course will ‘slip through the net’, as we see so many do.

FEES

At W1 we have always put massive emphasis on not exploiting actors and trying to make things as affordable as we can, hence offering a part time intensive course rather than a full time one which allows you to still work.

We have worked this course out at approximately £60 per day, which makes the fee for the year £7,400. We feel this represents extremely good value and comes in at over half the price of many 1 year courses being offered elsewhere.

We would require £1,000 on acceptance of your place and the full fee would be due prior to the start date of the course September 10th 2018.

As we have chosen to only work with 14 students for this year we must ensure all payments are met in order to offer the course at this fee.

Based on our research this is what we believe is all at least half the price of the foundation and one-year courses available currently based on the hours of tuition they offer.

After working with so many actors post training from Musical Theatre courses whose acting skills have needed so much extra work we are set on the core of our course being based in acting so whatever you do after you leave us, whether it be acting or musical theatre you feel free and confident to approach all of these from the truthful same place.

We are not branding this a Musical Theatre Course. This course will be suitable for you if you have an ambition to go into acting or musical theatre, however please note there is heavy focus on singing technique as there is acting technique, so if you don't feel in anyway musically inclined this course may not be for you, however if both is something you’d like to do you will be equipped to do so.

W1WORKSHOPS

TESTIMONIALS

I attended my first W1Workshop back in October 2012 and haven't looked back since. In the past 5 years Nancy and David have been a dream to work with, always going above and beyond to help  whatever way they can. What makes W1 stand out is that they genuinely care about each and every one of their students. They understand how tough this industry is, and how expensive it can be to keep on top of your skills while also trying to survive London life. They will never overcharge you for a workshop with an industry professional, and will ALWAYS work with you in a constructive, creative way that encourages you to think for yourself rather than 'telling you what you're doing wrong.' I have a lot to thank these guys for, I wouldn't be where I am in my career without them. Here's to the next 5 years!

SEAN CAREY

The Play That Goes Wrong West End

I had very few contacts and practically no network when I moved to London only 3 years ago. W1 not only provided great workshops to work on my rep, trial different choices, make mistakes and get insightful, useful feedback, but they also became my community. I was able to be seen by top industry professionals who would otherwise never have seen me, and I am now represented by an excellent agency and in a major West End show. W1 provided the opportunities, and I was prepared and determined enough to take them. I will continue to hone my skills and work with them, and recommend others do as well, no matter what stage in your career.

NATASHA O’BRIEN

Mamma Mia! West End, now represented by Grantham Hazeldine

The best decision I made back in Summer of 2012 was going to W1 Workshops. My friend recommended them and I had no idea what I was getting into. I was like a deer in headlights not knowing anything about the industry or if it was right for me. I had never done anything like it and the idea, to be honest, it terrified me. At the beginning of the week I just about got through my song. I couldn't even get through a monologue, in fact I originally tried to get out of doing it because I was so scared (they were having none of it).

Fast forward to now I am working professionally in the industry. I wouldn't be doing this without them. It has been the most wonderful journey with W1 Workshops. They create an encouraging safe and comfortable atmosphere. You meet great people in the industry from directors to casting directors and MDs. They are working actors themselves so they completely get it and they know how it all works which is evident in the quality of their workshops and the guests.

They are approachable and easy to talk to, over the years they have helped me immensely. I haven't found anywhere else that lives up to W1 and at such an affordable price. I still go now, they will never get rid of me! Just go for it! It will be the best decision you make I have never looked back. Thank you W1 for everything.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (West End), Wildfire (Hampstead Theatre)

It is thanks to the uncommonly insightful and incisive teaching of Nancy Sullivan and David Thaxton that I am fortunate enough to feel ready and prepared for any audition that may be thrown at me, whatever notice I am given. It is also thanks to their relentless enthusiasm, knowledge and passion for their subject that I have made great steps toward being a more connected and technically able performer. The classes they provide are specifically targeted to provide high-quality professional development in areas that are genuinely relevant and in-demand for young performers, whether student or professional and, of course, they are affordable. I have not only gained teachers but also mentorship and friendship from Nancy and David and their successes are continually reflected in their students, many of whom have gained top representation and many of whose faces now populate leading drama schools and west end shows such as ‘Les Miserables’, ‘Mamma Mia’ and many others. I couldn’t

recommend their workshops enough.

Recent graduate, now represented by Cowley Knox and Guy

W1WORKSHOPS offer something truly unique: a focussed, devoted workshop that is responsive to every actor that attends. Incredible value
